Charities
When we first decided to donate part of our profits
to two different charities, we realized how important
it was to choose wisely and to find out how individual
charities actually use the money that is given
to them.
We came across Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org), who provides information on over five thousand
charities and evaluates their financial health. Charity Navigator is a non-profit organization and does not
accept any contributions from the charities they evaluate.
The big decision to be made was what kind of
charity to choose. We both knew that we preferred
it to be local organizations so we would be able
to have personal contact. But there are so many
causes: the environment, animals, women's shelters,
hospices... The list is endless, and so many are worthy.
After giving it a lot of thought however, we
realized that the cause closest to our hearts
is to help children. They are the future. If we
don't give today's children the chance to grow
into strong, conscious adults with respect for
the planet, we feel there is not much hope left.
Today's children are the ones who very soon will
make the decisions that will more or less impact
every other cause.
We found these two charities with a four star
rating on Charity Navigator who support children
and their families:
Families Forward is a non-profit agency dedicated
to helping low income and homeless families in
need. Two parents working at minimum wage can
hardly cover the rent for a two-bedroom apartment,
and families are often faced with the decision
to pay for shelter, transportation or food. As
a community partner, Families Forward is dedicated
to helping struggling families not have to choose
between feeding their children and paying for
rent. Families Forward provides a broad spectrum
of services, including: housing, counseling, food,
education, case management, life-skills training
and rent or utility assistance.
Children's Network International's mission is
to provide assistance to medical and dental outreaches
throughout The United States, Mexico, Honduras,
Guatemala, El Salvador, the Philippines, selected
countries in Russia and Africa. They provide food,
clothing, personal care items, etc. CNI's major
concern is to meet the needs of the homeless and
low-income families throughout the inner cities
of America. Each week, CNI distributes food products
to qualified distribution centers. CNI also operates
Overseas Medical Missions where they send doctors
and dentists to provide treatment at free clinics
throughout the world.
